老挝位于中南半岛北部的内陆国家。北邻中国，南接柬埔寨、东界越南，西北达缅甸，西南毗连泰国。北部与中国云南的滇西高原接壤，东部老、越边境为长山山脉构成的高原，西部是湄公河谷地和湄公河及其支流沿岸的盆地和小块平原。全国自北向南分为上寮、中寮和下寮，上寮地势最高，川圹高原海拔200—2800米。最高峰比亚山峰海拔2820米。发源于中国的湄公河是****河流，流经西部1900公里。属热带、亚热带季风气候，分为雨季和旱季。老挝经济以农业为主，工业基础薄弱。农业人口约占全国人口的90％，主要农作物有水稻、玉米、薯类、咖啡等。老挝水力资源丰富。森林面积约900万公顷，森林覆盖率达42％，出产柚木和紫檀等名贵木材。老挝有着铜、金、锡、铁、非金属、煤等丰富的矿产资源，其中铜金属储量100万吨；金矿C+D级储量1000干克；砂锡矿储量约13万吨；原生矿潜力可达20万吨以上；铁矿储量达10亿吨；非金属与能源矿铝土矿储量超2亿吨；煤炭储量达4000万吨；也是蓝宝石生产国。近年来，旅游业成为老挝经济发展的新兴产业。老挝的琅勃拉邦市、巴色瓦普寺已被列入世界文化遗产名册。
